After 24 years, Paul Jackson was arrested

After a man being on the run for over 24 years, the man being accused of kidnapping and torturing two women has been brought into custody.Paul Jackson and his brother, kidnapped two prostitutes and held them captive for days, then they were arrested. After they were released on bail, they had never been seen since.  On Monday, he was arrested in Guadalajara, and he will be brought back to Oregon following court in Mexico. This is fascinating to me that he was on the run for so long, it is also reassuring to the victims finally have closure and are safe for over twenty years.

Men and Women Differ From how they Respond to Treatment

After 20 years of research, it is proved that men and women experience diseases differently and how they respond to diseases. For example Alzheimer's is rumored to be ruled majority of women, with almost 2/3rds of patients being women. Research has shown that this is indeed true because the hormones, that the ovarian decline has a great deal to due with this. How are they treating people differently? They are treating women and men the same based on clinical trials to see the severity of the symptoms and how it worsens or gets better. Another fascinating addiction is nicotine. Women are more prone to get addicted to nicotine as men are. Because these theories are not yet "proven" and still are undergo research, the gender biased approach is not yet the common view.

Teacher is Put on Leave for Racial Slur During Class Discussion

After over 1300 people signed a document, a teacher in Virginia is banned from the classroom. During a class discussion the teacher used the N word while talking about terms throughout history. I think that a teacher not being able to teach based on this is absurd, yes I think that racial slurs are offensive and should not be tolerated anywhere especially in the school system but where do you draw the line as educators? A school should not include this in the curriculum if it will risk someones job to teach it. Its also interesting to me that she is teaching history, no matter the circumstance history is history, and it happened. It should be taught, no one can change how terrible racism was and segregation was, but we should still learn where we came from. There were also questions brought up in an AP history class at the same school about the Redskins, one of the students took great offense to it, and The teacher is now on paid leave until it is decided if she can enter the classroom again. I don't think this is promoting a safe learning environment, especially for teachers.

College Student "Murdered" in 1984- Found Living

After 31 years of living a lie and thought to be murdered, was found two weeks ago alive in Dusseldorf. In 1989, the case was closed the Pazsikas was murdered but her body was never reported or found, the court ruled this case  a murder  because there was no further evidence. Police were called just a few weeks ago due to someone reporting a burglary, she showed an expired identification card and was proved to be the missing student. She had been living this secret life, where she had saved enough money to start a new life, with no expiation of her past life and no contact to anyone in her "real life". To me, I can't even comprehend her reasons for this because I think this is absurd. But I found this fascinating that the courts ruled this over thirty years ago, and she is just now being appeared, this seems to far fetched to even be belivable.

150 Cases of Shingella Reported

0926 shigella.jpg
Shigella has reached a record that has never been reached, with over 150 cases being reported.
Shigella is a an infectious bacteria that causes severe illness, people spike very high fevers and even have seizures. The symptoms range not only from fever but also from nausea and cramping. This recent outbreak has been like nothing the United States has ever seen before, because it is 15x the average that it has ever been before. Normally there are maybe 10 cases a year, but this year there has already been 150 cases. The majority of people who have been exposed to this illness have been children in elementary school, and who are exposed to the germs. If there are this many more outbreaks then how is this supposed to be treated? Doctors say to wash hands AND use paper towels so that the paper towel catches the bacteria.

School Bans Confederate Flag Symbols from Vehicles

In Virginia, a school bans all symbols of confederate flags on cars parking in school parking lots. Three students who did not follow this, were sent to the principals and were threatened with suspension. The schools states, " “vehicles must be free from displaying any flags or symbols that are deemed offensive to any race, religion, ethnic group, or sexual orientation.”- Christiansburg School. I think that yes, I am not in support of the representation of the flag, but also I think its violating peoples basic rights. If people want to believe in a certain religion, people can't tell them they cant, just like having a sticker on your car, society can't tell you that you cannot put your beliefs visibly. The schools states that the reason for this is to bring parking requirements in line with dress code and for locker demands. Schools are now requiring a contract, that says you can't have offensive stickers, flags or logos visible that could offend anyone. I agree with this, but I don't know where the school is crossing the line in enforcing this.

2 Dead, Several Injured when School Bus Overturns in Houston

The school bus had 4 students and the driver, it was driving to Furr High School, when it took a dive from an overpass. The school driver had no prior convictions or complaints, and the bus had been recently maintenance in the summer. Two students died, and the other three were severely injured. One student died on the scene, and the other student passed away once he got to the hospital. This tragedy was yes and accident but also with these tragedies comes with law suits. This school operates as one of the largest public schools district. When an incident like this happens, the superintendent steps in for the families and the community.

8TH Grader, Charged with Assult because of a Dare

http://www.newser.com/story/212771/8th-grader-kisses-girl-on-a-dare-charged-with-assault.html

In 8th grader, in Maryland, grabbed a classmate by her shirt and kissed her, as part of a dare, and unknowing the consequences. A simple kiss is know being handled by the school and by the criminal justice department. The thirteen year old boy was charged with a second degree assault and as well as disciplinary actions from his middle school. I find this extreme and almost a waste of time, how is a thirteen year old boy going to have a criminal record based on an immature dare? Yes, he should get in trouble because he disrespected and embarrassed a classmate. But the government should not be getting involved, the school and parents should be able to handle this on their own. I don't think they realize how big of deal this is, on his permanent record. This undated image provided by the City of Albuquerque via Shannon Kennedy shows a school-aged juvenile handcuffed in Albuquerque, N,M. Whether its ticketing students in Texas or handcuffing them from New Mexico to Massachusetts, experts say the criminalization of bad behavior at school is the outgrowth of zero-tolerance policies...

The emotional picture that shows thousands of peoples struggle to escape.

Last week, Reuters photography Yannis Behrakis captured a heartfelt picture of a Syrian refugee. This picture caught the attention because he is carrying his daughter through the rain, kissing her face. This picture shows the struggle for over 381,500 migrants and refugees who are attempting to enter Europe by sea. This picture has been so powerful that even Barack Obama has commented on it. He and his administration have announced that they are preparing for a scale up, for the number of Syrian refugees coming to the United States. Its interesting how a simple picture can show thousands of peoples hardships and how it touches many people.

Federalism

1. Federalism is the system in which the government in controlled by two levels of the government. The National Government helps with issues that effect the whole country and subdivisions of the government aid local issues. Both the National Government and the smaller subdivisions both have power to each other. The US federal system consists of the national government and governments of each state. https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/federalism

2. There are approximately 195 nation states in the world.

3. Federal Systems range, some express a variety of different aspects of a Federal Government. The US, Mexico, Germany, Canada, Australia and Brazil all have a standard federal government. There are 27 nations with federal systems of government. Most countries using the federalism system are large.

4. The Majority of Large Countries Operate by a Federal Government.

5.A Unitary System of Government is a sovereign state as a single thing. This means that a state governed is ruled as one in the central government, the central government chooses to delegate which powers.

6.Over 150 countries function as a unitary government. France, China, Japan, Italy and the United Kingdom are among the largest five unitary systems of government.

7. The Unitary Systems, puts all the power in the central government, where the Federal government some powers are given to the central government and powers are also dispersed to the lower levels of government as well. The advantages to the Federal Government is that the government is not over powered, because power is distributed.  An advantage to the Unitary government is that it creates and sets uniform policies, making a direct and aligned government. But also the issues among counties, causes conflicts because not all countries can be accommodated by a unitary government.

8. The states want the power, but they don't want to be controlled. They want the best of both worlds, but don't want to be controlled directly by the Federal Government.

9.The feds, are against marijuana that the man is using. The feds are saying it is illegal, but it portraying them as monsters because this man is using it for medicinal purposes. Using marijuana for cancer, is alot cheaper if regulated for medical use rather then using costly pharmaceuticals.

10. This picture portrays that the Government, agrees that states have their own power BUT when California comes in wanting to do something, they freak out. This is where it tends to be tricky on how much authority can and should be granted.

11. It uses a three layered cake, to show the local, state and federal governments and clearly depicts roles for each of the government. The layers show how they are switched up, when they are tiered it shows whats on top being superior. The representation of the teared cake, show alot of problems, because it is misleading

12. The marble cake is different than the layered cake because of the boundaries that are drawn for each of the three governments are unclear and they end up mixing. Shows how they are intertwined and mixed up.

Michelle Obama Talks Nutrition

Michelle Obama Second Term
The First lady, working to make children more aware of a healthy lifestyle.
With it being September, and the focus being on either Hunger Awareness or Childhood Obesity, brings in talk on how to fix these two opposite problems. Michelle Obama, has spent her past six years trying to put emphasis on getting children healthy and active. Michelle Obama herself, says that when Barack got a health wake up call, that it is when she set out to fix these problems. She has been working to redesign public spaces, creating bike paths, and cleaning parks so that children have a place to get active in a safe and clean environment. She also has been working with food and beverage companies to reducing the amount of calories on children's menus and in schools, and also putting the calories on menus so from a young age, people start paying attention to what they are putting in their bodies. She directly says, that being healthy is a lifestyle and its not about a scale its about feeling that your the best you can be. I think that this very important to our lifestyles, especially to children because most Americans aren't making living a healthy and active lifestyle a priority, resulting in most Americans being over weight.

An eleven year old in Missouri, fatally shot a 16 year old who was trying to break into the house with him and a four year old girl there. The shooting happened during broad daylight, two people had approached the house and on the third try, he was shot and killed. This story raises attention to guns, yes he defended himself, but he still 11 years old and has shot someone with a hand gun. A similar story occurred in the news, on a 21 month year old holding a gun and accidentally shot himself. In this case he defended him and his sister, but who is to say that an eleven year old should be shooting a gun?

Police remove the body of a 16-year-old from a home on Hallwood Drive in north St. Louis after an 11-year-old shot him dead in self defense, cops said.

Marco Rubio- Does not Need A Federal Education Department

Marco Rubio, a Florida Senator, introduced his views on education during a town hall meeting last Tuesday. Rubio thinks that in order to save money, that we should eliminate a federal Education Department, because it turns into orders which costs money. In contrast to eliminating a Federal Education Department, he does think that the curriculum in schools should be reevaluated but at a state level not at a federal level. Ironically,  his education, was funded by loans administered by the Education Department as well, so I don't think that this is 110% thought out on his part. I also think this is interesting because I think this is something very important, just to maintain order in schools and protecting peoples rights in schools. I think yes, its expensive but I think you would face more problems without it rather than with it.

California's End to Solitary Confinement In Prisons

Inmates in solitary confinement, are isolated from the public, windows and even sounds. In California, more than 500 inmates each spend a decade in solitary confinement for bad behavior. In 2012, a law suit was filed for inmates, that they could not spend extended amounts of time in isolation, but still could be a tool for punishment. Three years later, the road to ending solitary confinement begins. If you could reduce the need for solitary confinement, and instead provide educational classes, and visits from family, this could have a positive impact on in inmates life. In California, this matter was brought up by prisoners going on strikes to draw attention to the matter. Yes, I think that being locked up alone for years and years would make me go mentally insane, and I do think this matter should be addressed because it is inhumane. On the other hand, I think that if an Inmate is violent and dangerous to the public, then they should be locked up alone and with guidance and help, they should slowly learn how to live in a civilised environment with other people, when it is safe to do so. I don't know if its realistic to say that every state could pass this law, because of the amount of inmates in each prison and regulating the safety of the inmates and guards.

The U.S Smoking Rate Just Hit a Historic Low

There has been  huge new outbreak for public health, smoking has reach an all time low. In 2015, the United States has decreased 2 percentage points in smoking cigarettes than in 2014.There has been a long term plan since smoking was proved to be a health hazard. The campaign for reducing smoking has included, raising taxes on cigarettes, so people cant afford them; publicising the health hazards and the dangers with smoking; reaching out to young people about smoking and restricting people to smoke in public places. The struggle is tough and controversial because yes cigarettes can be reduced, but now people are using electronic cigarettes instead. I think that electronic cigarettes will be just as dangerous as cigarettes, people aren't educated on electronic cigarettes even though they are nearly the same as cigarettes.

<span class='image-component__caption' itemprop="caption">A new survey found the percentage of American adults who are using cigarettes on a regular basis dropped almost 2 percentage points from the results of a similar survey in 2014.</span>
Cigarettes are decreasing, but now ecigs are a now dangerous fad.
